State Electrical Act and Board Rules

Overview

Nebraska Statutes governing electrical licensing and inspection are known as the Nebraska State Electrical Act, Sections 81-2101 through 81-2143.

The Nebraska State Electrical Board rules consist of 19 promulgated rules adopted by the Board to enable it to carry out its mission of public safety through electrical licensing and inspection and can be found by clicking on the link above.

On April 8, 2009, the Governor signed into law Legislative Bill 403 (LB 403), which will require the verification of lawful presence in the United States for recipients of public benefits, public contractors and public employees as of October 1, 2009.

The new law impacts the Electrical Division's licensing procedures. All applicants for electrical apprenticeship and license will need to complete the United States Citizenship Attestation form and submit it with their applications. Exam applicants must complete this form to prevent any delay in issuing licenses after passing the examination.

To avoid any complications during the renewal season, the United States Citizenship Attestation form be completed and sent in now to be put in your file.

Every license and registration holder will need to complete a United States Citizenship Attestation form complete it and submit via fax, mail or email.

In order to renew a license issued under the State Electrical Act, the licensee shall be required to complete twelve contact hours of continuing education by January 1 of each odd numbered year. The continuing education courses shall be approved by the State Electrical Board and may consist of training programs, courses, and seminars by the State Electrical Division or public or private schools, organizations, or associations. The contact hours shall include a minimum of six contact hours studying the National Electrical Code described in Section 81-2104 of the State Electrical Act, and the remaining contact hours may include study of electrical circuit theory, blueprint reading, transformer and motor theory, electrical circuits and devices, control systems, programmable controllers, and microcomputers or any other study of electrical-related material that is approved by the board. Any additional hours studying the National Electrical Code shall be acceptable.
