Fequently Asked Questions

How do I know this online service is safe?

The Nebraska DMV online services are provided by a third party working in partnership with the State of Nebraska. These services are official State of Nebraska services and can be identified by the "www.nebraska.gov" in the URL. There are other ".org" and ".com" websites that claim to provide the same online services that are NOT official government websites. www.ClickDMV.ne.gov and all services provided on ClickDMV are Official Nebraska Government Websites.

Does my vehicle have to be titled and registered before I can order a specialty plate?

The vehicle must have a Nebraska title in your name, or the name of the leasing company if the vehicle is a leased vehicle, before you can apply for a specialty plate.

For information about how to obtain a Nebraska title, please refer to our website at: http://www.dmv.ne.gov/dvr/mvtitles.

Specialty plates are often also referred to as Vanity Plates, Personalized Custom Plates, and Message Plates.

After entering the vehicle owner information I received a message indicating that my information cannot be verified. What am I doing wrong?

This message generally means that the system cannot locate a Nebraska title in your name on the vehicle. You must have a Nebraska title in your name, or if the vehicle is leased a Nebraska title in the name of your leasing company, before you can make application for a specialty plate.

If you have a Nebraska title and are still receiving this message, contact the Driver and Vehicle Records Help Desk at 402.471.3918 for assistance.

How do I order specialty plates online if my vehicle is leased?

Enter all of the required information on the Vehicle Owner Information screen. At the bottom of the screen is the question "Is the vehicle leased?" Click the radial button to indicate "Yes." Enter the Lessor's name (this is the name of your leasing company as it appears on the title of the vehicle).

How will I know if my message is approved?

You will receive an e-mail from the DMV as soon as your message is approved. In addition, an approval letter will be mailed to the address you have provided with information regarding when your plates will be available at your County Treasurer's office so that you may register them to your vehicle.

Information about how to make a message choice may be found on our website at: http://www.dmv.ne.gov/dvr/specialty

Why do I get a reply that my message choice may be objectionable or is offensive, when I don't think it is?

The characters in the order used shall not express, connote, or imply any obscene or objectionable words or abbreviations. The DMV has the sole authority to determine whether a message may be approved or denied.

The DMV uses multiple tools in an effort to review all possible meanings of a message choice before approving or denying a choice. While your message selection may not be intended to be offensive, we must consider how the message will be seen and interpreted by others.

If a message has previously been denied it will be denied immediately. Other messages are reviewed at the DMV and followed up with an e-mail response within 1-2 business days of submittal.

How long does it take to receive my specialty plates once I've ordered them online?

It takes three (3) to four (4) weeks for your plates to be manufactured and shipped to your County Treasurer. You will receive an approval letter from the DMV indicating the date your plates will be available at your County Treasurer's office for you to pick up and register to your vehicle.

It is possible that the plates could arrive early. If you wish you may contact your County Treasurer after two (2) weeks to see if the plates have arrived.

Will my specialty plates be mailed directly to me?

No. Once the plates are manufactured they are shipped directly to your County Treasurer's office. To take possession of the specialty plates you must register them to your vehicle.

Will I receive two plates?

Two (2) plates are issued for each vehicle unless the vehicle is a motorcycle, mobile home, trailer or minitruck, in which case you will be issued one (1) plate.

What do I do with my county plates when I pick up my specialty plates?

You will need to surrender your county plates and registration to your County Treasurer when you register your specialty plates.

I paid a fee for my plates when I ordered them. Is it a one-time fee or will I be required to pay it annually.

Specialty plate fees are due at the time of initial application and again each time the vehicle's registration is renewed for as long as you retain the plate. Please note that if you order and register your specialty plates in the middle of your registration period, you will be required to pay the specialty plate fee at initial application and again when you renew the registration on your vehicle. To avoid paying the specialty plate fee twice in one registration period we suggest that you order your plates approximately one month prior to your vehicle's registration renewal month and register the plates when you renew your registration.

What should I take with me when I visit my County Treasurer's office to pick up my specialty plates?

Bring the approval letter from the DMV, your current plates and registration, current proof of insurance, and an acceptable method of payment for your county. If the specialty plates are picked up in a month other than the month of the vehicle's registration expiration a fee of $12.10 for a vehicle with two (2) plates and $8.80 for a vehicle with one (1) plate will be due when replacing your current license plates with your specialty plates.

To confirm acceptable methods of payment, please contact your County Treasurer. A listing of County Treasurers, along with their contact information, may be found on our website at: http://www.dmv.ne.gov/dvr/mvtitles/ctyofflist.html.

I want to transfer my message from my Message plate to a Husker Message plate. Can I do so online?

No. Unfortunately the transfer of a message from one specialty plate type to another cannot be processed online. You will need to submit a completed Application for Specialty plate to the DMV, along with the appropriate fee.

An Application for Specialty Plates may be downloaded from our website at: http://www.dmv.ne.gov/dvr/pdf/spltypltapp.pdf

What should I do if I currently have specialty plates but no longer want them?

You will need to complete a Specialty Plate Relinquishment Form and submit to your County Treasurer's office along with one of your specialty plates and your current registration.

Your County Treasurer will issue regular county plates to you upon receipt of the Relinquishment Form and specialty plate. If you relinquish your plates in the month your registration is due, a plate fee of $6.60 ($3.30 for a vehicle with one plate) will be added to your motor vehicle registration fees to cover the cost of the regular county plates. The renewal fee for the specialty plates will be deducted.

If you are surrendering your specialty plate in the month other than the month your registration is due, a fee of $12.10 ($8.80 for a vehicle with one plate) will be assessed for the regular county plates and generation of the new registration.
